School-Wide Expectations:
The First 5 of the Essential 55 Written by Ron Clark
- When responding to an adult, you must answer by saying “Yes, ma’am” or “No, sir”. Just nodding your head or saying any other form of yes or no is not acceptable.
- Make eye contact. When someone is speaking, keep your eyes on him or her the entire time.
- If someone in the class wins a game or does something well, we will congratulate that person.
- During discussions, respect other students’ comments, opinions, and ideas.
- If you win, do not brag. If you lose, do not show anger.
Positive Reinforcements-
I use positive reinforcement with my words to students as well as with the classroom clip-chart. Reasons to clip-up include, but are not limited to, the following:
Each student will have a punch card assigned to them. When any teacher in the school witnesses excellent behavior of a student that student will receive a punch on their assigned card. When a student receives all punches on their card they earn a prize from our principal!
The Clip Chart will be used in conjunction with the punch card. The punch card is a school-wide initiative while the Clip Chart is a tool that I will be using in my classroom. All students start on green. With 3 warnings they go down to "make better choices". Next 3 warnings moves them to "teachers Choice". Final 3 warnings or a completely unacceptable action moves a student down to "parent contact". If a student remains on green until the end of the day then he/she will receive a punch on their good behavior card.
Anonymity-
I do have to recognize negative behaviors once students have continued not to change what they are doing. I try to keep the off-task student anonymous by saying things such as, “waiting on two friends to give me their eyes” and “please don’t touch the bulletin board”. Once I have given reminders anonymously and the student’s actions do not change I have to bring attention to him/her in order to correct the situation.
Referrals- Given the degree of a student’s actions, a referral may be written to Dr. Richardson. A referral may be written for destruction of school property, threatening or harming other students, being disobedient, among other things.
I use positive reinforcement with my words to students as well as with the classroom clip-chart. Reasons to clip-up include, but are not limited to, the following:
- “Hips and lips” and “hair stare” the entire time in the hallway or while lining up.
- Remaining on-task with class work
- Quietly waiting for the next activity with the proper materials
- Turning, sitting and looking the correct way during carpet-time
- Raising a hand to speak rather than shouting out or getting out-of-seat
